Meewasin Rotary was hosting an Exchange Student from Taiwan at the time when Rotary recalled most of their Students Worldwide in spring 2020. Some students took until September to get home due to the effects of COVID 19 in their Host and Home countries, but our student returned to her home in March.
It was recently announced that Rotary International has suspended all Youth Exchange programs until June 30, 2022 in an effort to maintain the safety of everyone involved. We will be actively looking for student to participate in 2022 shortly.
In addition to the Youth Exchange, the Club supports various programs such as Adventures in Technology, Citizenship, Agriculture, Music, and Model United Nations which have been running in a Virtual format currently, but unfortunately some have been cancelled or postponed for the current year. We are always looking for students with special interests that we can support with these camps.
Our regional District runs a successful Youth Leadership Development Camp for youth known as RYLA. They have been running several online sessions in 2020 and have provided great fun for those involved. This traditionally was a summer camp running in age groups of 12 to 14, and 15 to 17 in August at Clear Lake, Manitoba.
Club members volunteer in the reading program at St. Michael Community School as well as providing funds for a Catch-a-Reader program to reward students for self-initiatives in reading and books. Physically attending the school has been temporarily suspended however, we are still providing books to the school. Our thoughts are with them as we wish we were there in person!
